Chumar Bakar, the "clay mountain with steel-like glints", rises to 5,600 m in the Karakoram range, in northern Pakistan, near the Chinese border on the Silk Road. It is there, in glacial cold, that incredible aquamarine crystals flourish.
Driven by the unreasoning love of stones that has always taken him to the furthest extremes, Patrick attempted at Chumar Bakar his most extraordinary and most perilous sporting and human feat. Alone, he joined the handful of men — local shepherds turned miners — who risk their lives six months a year in the artisanal extraction of precious stones. His exceptional expedition, in an Islamic country still in dispute with India, where local guerrilla warfare rages, also allowed him to reach the heart of a people who still live by their ancestral customs and beliefs.
This book tells how, in the name of a mad dream, a man must at every moment try to save his own skin.
