November Birthstone: The Topaz
November has two birthstones, both golden and warm: the topaz and the citrine. Focus on the former, a gem of remarkable brilliance with an often-overlooked history.
The topaz: brilliance in its pure state
Natural topaz stands out for exceptional transparency and brilliance, linked to its very pure crystal structure. While blue topaz (almost always treated) has flooded the market, it is natural yellow and imperial topazes that quicken the pulse of connoisseurs: golden-to-orange hues, warm and luminous.

Symbolism: strength and abundance
In antiquity, topaz was associated with the sun and with strength. The Egyptians saw in it the light of Ra; in the Middle Ages, it was believed to dispel spells. Today it symbolises abundance and confidence — a fine message for a November birthday.
How to choose a topaz
- Favour the untreated: a natural yellow or golden topaz, with no treatment, is far rarer than the irradiated blue topazes of the trade;
- The cut: its clarity magnificently supports architectural cuts such as the Asscher or the emerald cut;
- The volume: topaz offers fine carats at a reasonable price — ideal for a statement piece.
