"How much does a sapphire cost?" — the question sounds simple, but the answer is less so: from a few tens of euros to several tens of thousands of euros per carat. Here is what really determines a sapphire's price, explained by a dealer.
The Price Is Calculated Per Carat... and It Is Not Linear
The first habit to adopt: we always speak in price per carat (1 carat = 0.20 g). And that price climbs exponentially with weight: a 4-carat sapphire is not worth twice a 2-carat sapphire of the same quality, but considerably more — because large fine stones are infinitely rarer.
The 4 Factors That Determine the Price
- Colour (the king criterion): an intense, vivid, luminous blue — neither too dark nor washed out — concentrates the value. The designations "royal blue" and "cornflower" describe the most sought-after shades;
- Treatment: for equal beauty, an unheated sapphire is worth appreciably more than a heated one — sometimes double, or well beyond on fine pieces;
- Origin: Kashmir (legendary), Burma and Ceylon (Sri Lanka) carry a historical premium; Madagascar today produces superb stones at gentler prices;
- Clarity and cut: an eye-clean, well-proportioned stone that returns light evenly will always be worth more than a dull or windowed one.
Honest Orders of Magnitude
Rather than precise figures that shift with the market: a pretty heated 1-carat sapphire can be found for a few hundred euros; a fine unheated sapphire of 2 to 3 carats runs into the thousands; and exceptional pieces (large, unheated, prestigious origin) into the tens of thousands. The good news: by buying from a dealer who sources at the mine, you avoid the multiple intermediaries who inflate the final price.
