Afghan Rubellite: A Vivid Pink 8.71-Carat Tourmaline Joins the Catalogue
Among tourmalines, Rubellite holds a place of its own. Its name comes from the Latin rubellus, “reddish”, and denotes those tourmalines whose intense pink leans towards raspberry red. When the colour reaches Vivid Pink grade, as it does in the stone we have just acquired, you are at the very summit of what this variety can offer.
An 8.71-carat stone from Afghanistan
This 8.71-carat Rubellite has been cut as a cushion (11.65 × 10.92 × 9.10 mm), a shape that maximises the depth of colour while preserving excellent light return. It comes from Afghanistan, whose Nuristan deposits produce some of the finest pink tourmalines on the market.
Why is Rubellite so sought after?
Unlike many pink tourmalines, whose colour pales under artificial light, a true Rubellite keeps its intensity in every lighting condition. That criterion, combined with the rarity of stones above 5 carats, makes it a collector's gem. At close to 9 carats, this stone is as well suited to a bespoke high jewellery piece as to a collection of coloured stones.
