October Birthstone: The Tourmaline

October offers those born in it two birthstones: the opal and the tourmaline. This guide is devoted to the latter, because no other gem offers such a palette of colours — it is nicknamed “the rainbow stone” for good reason.

The tourmaline: all the colours of nature

Soft pink, rubellite red, deep green, indicolite blue, peach, bicolour “watermelon”… tourmaline exists in practically every hue, sometimes several within the same crystal. This diversity makes it the ideal stone for anyone seeking a truly personal colour.

The most sought-after varieties

  • Rubellite: intense red-pink, the most precious of the classic tourmalines;
  • Indicolite: deep blue, rare and highly sought after;
  • Paraíba: electric neon blue, the absolute star, whose prices rival the greatest gems;
  • Bicolours: two colours in a single crystal — every stone is unique.

Which jewel for a tourmaline?

Hardness 7 to 7.5 on the Mohs scale: the tourmaline can be worn in a ring with a minimum of care, and with no restriction at all as a pendant or earrings. Its large carats at reasonable prices allow for spectacular pieces — to be set in bespoke mountings by our partner jeweller.
