France Sets the Official Terminology for Synthetic Diamonds

A recent decree from the French Ministry of the Economy establishes a clear distinction in jewellers' terminology: the official terms for artificially produced diamonds are now "diamant de synthèse" (synthesised diamond) or "synthétique" (synthetic).

A Terminology Battle Finally Settled

The controversy over what to call diamonds not mined from the ground raged for years. Ethical jewellery designers such as Dorothée Contour of JEM argued that the previous designations were misleading and pejorative, suggesting inferior quality. That position was firmly rejected by the industry's traditionalists.

France, following Italy's example, is holding a firm line on the issue, while others, such as the United States and Germany, are more permissive. Michel Bruley, an expert in the field, warns of possible confusion and stresses the need for transparency.
